Significant Resolution in Billion-Dollar Securities Fraud Class Action

December 8, 2022 Case Study

Pearlstein v. BlackBerry Limited et al., case number 1:13-cv-07060, in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York.

After nine years of hard fought litigation and with six weeks remaining until trial, Beck Redden was hired to help try a complex billion-dollar federal securities fraud class action lawsuit filed on behalf of a class of investors against BlackBerry concerning allegations that the company defrauded shareholders by making misleading claims about the success of its BlackBerry 10 smartphones.

Beck Redden’s reputation as a premier trial firm is known to give our opponents cause to assess their settlement expectations more carefully and objectively than they otherwise might. After Beck Redden announced its appearance as trial counsel, Blackberry agreed to pay $165 million to settle the matter the day before jury selection was scheduled to begin.

The Beck Redden trial team included David J. Beck, Fields Alexander, Garrett Brawley, and Madison Young Moore, and appellate support was provided by Russell Post and Parth Gejji.
