The Firm is proud to congratulate associate Bilma A. Canales on being named a Latino Board Fellow for the Greater Houston area by Latinos for Education. The Latino Board Fellowship identifies, supports, and places Latinos working within and outside the education sector in Massachusetts and Greater Houston onto governing boards of schools and education nonprofit organizations. As a board member, Bilma has an important role to play in addressing educational inequity and influencing better educational outcomes for all children.

Born in the East End of Houston and raised in an immigrant community, Bilma is acutely aware of and passionate in addressing educational inequity in minority communities. She also taught middle school English Language Arts in the Gulfton community in Southwest Houston before law school. Bilma joined the fellowship to re-enter the education world and continue the fight in supporting our Latino communities.

Fellows participate in comprehensive training and a rigorous cultivation process to match each Fellow with the most appropriate local organization’s governing Board of Directors. Seminars feature thought-provoking readings and discussions about the state of Latino education, nonprofit governance, and diversity and inclusion.
